New information about using PRESTO on the TTC

You can now use PRESTO to pay your MiWay fare on TTC buses that travel into Mississauga.

Travelling from Mississauga to Toronto:

  • Tap your PRESTO card when you board the bus in Mississauga.
  • Your MiWay fare will be deducted.
  • When you arrive in Toronto, tap before you exit the bus to pay your TTC fare.

Travelling from Toronto to Mississauga:

  • Tap your PRESTO card when you board the bus in Toronto. Your TTC fare will be deducted.
  • When you arrive in Mississauga, tap your PRESTO card reader at the front of the bus when you exit. Your MiWay fare will be deducted.

Travelling on a TTC bus within Mississauga:

  • Tap your PRESTO card when you board the bus. Your MiWay fare will be deducted
  • You are not required to tap off, if you board a TTC bus within Mississauga.

Starting August 26, PRESTO card customers will be able to use their PRESTO card to pay their YRT fare on TTC buses that travel to and from York Region (102D Markham Road, 129A McCowan North, 17A Birchmount, 68B Warden and 160 Bathurst North).

Changes to fare payment on Downtown Express bus routes.

A new TTC Monthly Downtown Express Pass and 12 Month Downtown Express Pass will be available starting with the September pass period

  • They will be available for sale from August 26 until September 8.
  • The TTC Monthly Downtown Express Pass and 12 Month Downtown Express Pass will provide unlimited travel per month across the TTC, including the five Downtown Express bus routes. 
  • The passes replace the need to purchase the Downtown Express bus sticker, which will be discontinued on August 30, 2019. 

Please note: 

If you are interested in purchasing a TTC Monthly Downtown Express Pass or 12 Month Downtown Express Pass and have Autorenew or a regular 12 Month Pass, you must cancel your Autorenew agreement or 12 Month Pass before August 23, 2019. Pre-Authorized Debit (PAD) customers cannot switch until the October pass window. Please ensure that your existing contract is cancelled after August 23rd and that your paper form[link] is received by September 19th. Most banks offer online debit transactions, if you wish to complete the switch in time for September.

Using PRESTO on TTC buses that travel into York Region

Starting August 26, PRESTO card customers will be able to use their PRESTO card to pay their YRT fare on TTC buses that travel to and from York Region (102D Markham Road, 129A McCowan North, 17A Birchmount, 68B Warden and 160 Bathurst North).

Travelling from York Region to Toronto:

  • Tap your PRESTO card when you board the bus in York Region. Your YRT fare will be deducted.
  • When you arrive in Toronto, tap before you exit the bus to pay your TTC fare.

Travelling from Toronto to York Region:

  • Tap your PRESTO card when you board the bus in Toronto. Your TTC fare will be deducted.
  • When you arrive in York Region, tap your PRESTO card reader at the front of the bus when you exit. Your YRT fare will be deducted.

Travelling on a TTC bus within York Region:

Southbound:

  • Tap your PRESTO card when you board the bus.

Northbound

  • Tap your PRESTO card when you exit the bus.  

Until these changes are introduced you must pay your YRT and/or MiWay fare as you do today (TTC fare plus a supplement, cash or YRT and/or MiWay fare product). The same applies for the reverse. When you board a TTC bus in York Region or Mississauga you must deposit your YRT and/or MiWay fare or cash in the fare box. If you want to pay your TTC fare by PRESTO, you must tap your card when you leave the bus in Toronto.

Information about PRESTO

You can use PRESTO to pay your fare on all TTC streetcars, buses (including Wheel-Trans and accessible taxis) and at every subway station.

If you use a Wheel-Trans sedan taxi, you can pay your fare using your monthly pass on your PRESTO card. If you do not have a monthly pass on your PRESTO card, you must pay by cash, ticket or token.

You can also use PRESTO to pay your fare on UP Express, GO Transit, Brampton Transit, Burlington Transit, Durham Region Transit, Hamilton Street Railway, MiWay, Oakville Transit and OC Transpo in Ottawa.

Using PRESTO to pay your fare

To pay your fare by PRESTO you need to:

Buy a card for $6

1. Fare Vending Machine at subway stations

  • Shoppers Drug Mart locations
  • Online at prestocard.ca
  • TTC’s Customer Service Centre

2. Set your fare type on your card

All PRESTO cards are automatically set to deduct an adult fare. You can have your PRESTO card set to a youth, post-secondary student or senior card at:

  • Shoppers Drug Mart locations
  • The TTC’s Customer Service Centre above Davisville Station

You must bring government issued identification or your TTC post-secondary photo identification card with you, in order to have your PRESTO card set to a youth, post-secondary student or senior card. You only have to set your fare type once. As long as you don’t lose your card your fare type will remain active until it expires i.e. when a child turns 13 or youth turns 20. Post-secondary students must reset their fare type yearly along with their TTC Post-Secondary student photo identification.  

3. Load your card with money or a monthly pass

You can load money on your PRESTO card to pay your fare or load a TTC Monthly Pass or 12-Month Pass, which provides unlimited travel for one month, in the following ways:

  • Fare Vending Machine at subway stations
  • Shoppers Drug Mart locations
  • Online at prestocard.ca
  • TTC’s Customer Service Centre

Monthly passes are available for sale from the last 12 days of the month until eight days after the start of the next month.

4. Tap every time you enter a subway station or board a bus or streetcar.

Note: Wheel-Trans sedan taxi customers must provide their PRESTO card with their monthly pass on it to the driver and he or she will record the PRESTO card number down.

Identification requirements when traveling on the TTC

Youths ages 16-19

  • You are required to carry your high school photo identification or government issued photo identification, such as a driver’s license or Ontario Photo Card with you and present it to TTC staff upon request.

Post-secondary students

  • You are required to carry your TTC Post-Secondary Photo Identification when using your Post-Secondary Monthly Pass and present it to TTC staff upon request.

Seniors ages 65+

You are required to carry your TTC Senior’s Photo Identification or government issued photo identification, such as a driver’s license or Ontario Photo Card, with you and present it to TTC staff upon request.

PRESTO fares

  • $3.10 (Adult)
  • $2.15 (Senior, age 65+ / Youth, ages 13-19)
  • Save up to $1.60 per trip when you transfer between TTC and GO Transit or UP Express when you pay your fare with PRESTO. Learn more. (Effective April 6)
  • Monthly pass (Adult - $151.15; Senior/Youth - $122.45)
  • 12 Month Pass (Adult - $138.55; Senior/Youth $112.25)
  • Post-Secondary Monthly Pass ($122.45) 
  • PRESTO Tickets   (One-ride - $3.25; Two-ride - $6.50; Day pass - $13.00)

Transfers using PRESTO

If you pay your fare from the balance on your PRESTO card you can take advantage of the TTC’s two-hour transfer. With this transfer, you can hop on and off the system and switch directions at any point in your journey. As long as you are within two hours from your first time  tap you will not be charged another fare.  Learn more.

Using PRESTO on Downtown Express Buses

If you have a PRESTO card you can pay your first of the double fare required on a Downtown Express Bus by tapping your PRESTO card on the card reader, but you must pay the additional fare by token, cash, Downtown Express bus sticker (which you can buy at a collector booth and stick to your card) or ticket.
